What the scores mean
- Reading ease (Flesch): 0 to 100, where higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read comfortably.
- Grade level (Flesch-Kincaid): the U.S. school grade a reader would need. Most web writing aims for grade 8 or below.
- Sentence length variation: how much your sentence lengths differ. Some variety keeps writing readable.
- Vocabulary variety: the share of different words in each 100-word stretch. Low numbers can mean repetition.
- Possible passive phrases: a rough pattern match for passive voice, such as “was written.” Check each one yourself.
- Words with 3+ syllables: a high share usually makes text harder to read.
How to make writing easier to read
- Split sentences longer than about 25 words
- Swap long words for shorter ones where meaning stays the same
- Use active voice when it is clearer who did what
- Cut or vary words you repeat often
- Read it aloud: places where you stumble usually need work
Why this is not an AI detector
Some AI detectors look at similar signals, such as how even your sentence lengths are. But careful human writers, people writing in a second language, and anyone following a style guide can score the same way. That is a major reason detectors produce false positives. Use these numbers to improve clarity, not to judge who wrote something.
