Classroom AI Policy Template
A ready-to-edit syllabus AI policy covering allowed uses, disclosure, how authorship is checked, and how concerns are handled.
[COURSE NAME] – Policy on Generative AI Purpose This course is designed to build your own skills in [SUBJECT/SKILL]. These rules explain when you may use generative AI tools (such as chatbots, AI writing assistants, and AI features in grammar tools) and how to use them honestly. Allowed use (choose one and delete the others) Option A – Not allowed: You may not use generative AI tools for any graded work in this course unless an assignment says otherwise. Option B – Allowed for specific tasks: You may use AI tools only for [brainstorming topics / explaining concepts / checking grammar]. You may not use AI to write, rewrite, or summarize text you submit as your own. Option C – Allowed with disclosure: You may use AI tools to support your work, but the ideas, analysis, and final wording must be your own, and you must disclose how you used AI. Disclosure If you use AI in any way this policy allows, add a short note at the end of your work stating the tool you used, what you used it for, and how you checked or changed its output. Honest disclosure will never lower your grade by itself. How authorship may be checked For major assignments you may be asked to submit drafts, version history, or a writing record, or to discuss your work with me. Please write in a tool that keeps version history, such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word saved to the cloud. About AI detectors AI detectors can be wrong. [I do not use AI detectors. / A detector result may prompt a conversation, but it will never be the only basis for any finding.] If there is a concern I will talk with you privately first and give you a chance to show how you completed the work. Concerns that cannot be resolved will follow [INSTITUTION]'s academic integrity process, which includes your right to respond and appeal. Questions If you are unsure whether a use of AI is allowed, ask me before you submit. Asking is always the right choice.
